Exploration Place

Schaefer Architecture was selected by world-renowned architect Moshe Safdie to join his design team as associate architects for the design of Wichita’s Exploration Place science center and children’s museum. This $26 million project engaged the services of more than 14 specialized consultants, so communication between disciplines and the owner was key to the project’s success.

This 95,000 square foot facility is nestled in a 20-acre park along the Arkansas River near downtown Wichita. The two-building concept starts with a main building that holds a lobby, gift shop, café, simulation center and cyberdome theatre. To get to the second building, visitors cross a window-encased pedestrian bridge overlooking water. From there, the opportunities to explore are endless in the multiple exhibit spaces and classrooms.
