In addition to the vital roles of our architectural associates, our in-house interior design department helps bridge the gap between the exterior and interior, creating cohesion and depth in our projects and elevating the atmosphere to match our clients’ visions. Our interior design department helps us maintain strong client communication from start to finish on a project, provide space planning, develop interior furnishings and millwork design, create wall graphics, and incorporate additional details that add character and bring spaces to life.

David Rhoten

Associate | Interior Architectural Designer

Dave Rhoten, an associate of our firm and interior architectural designer, also serves as our information technology (IT) manager. He has been instrumental in our firm’s transition from hand-drafting to computer-based design, incorporating 3D modeling, rendering, and virtual reality technology. Dave often works on smaller projects, typically collaborating with one to three team members at a time. He expertly balances creating layouts and designs, translating them into working drawings, and interfacing with design teams, clients, and consultants, all while managing in-house technology, hardware, and network upgrades. Despite his impressive 37 years of experience, Dave remains committed to personal growth: “There is always something to learn that will help you grow, help you be better, help you do better. It is my responsibility to learn and to apply that new knowledge.”

In her daily role, she oversees project schedules for our interior design department and coordinates interior finishes, casework, furniture, and graphics—from programming and design development to construction documents and specifications. Driven by compassion, service, and creativity, Amy strives to enhance projects by listening to her clients and translating their visions into compelling narratives through design. Notably, she has played a pivotal role in numerous YMCA projects across several states, including Kansas, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Texas. Reflecting on her journey, she recalls, “I have extreme pride in our YMCA facilities and the programs they provide communities, and it has been a blessing to be a part of their success throughout the years.”

Heather Hatcher, IIDA, NCIDQ

Associate | Interior Designer

Heather Hatcher is an associate of our firm and an accomplished interior designer with certification from the NCIDQ. Fascinated by the impact that the built world has on a persons’ quality of life, she was drawn to interior design and has even shown a commitment to “green” design, demonstrated by being one of the first in our office to pass the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) exam. “The thing I love about interiors is that every day is different. Being involved in all stages of a project and serving multiple clients provides variety in my day,” she says. Whether producing interior drawings, space planning, specifying furniture, or designing custom millwork and finish selections, Heather coordinates the interior elements of a project from design inception to construction completion. Noting that her first priority is always to serve the community and listen to her clients, Heather’s motivation is clear: “My goal is to improve the interior environment and quality of life for all the occupants of the buildings we design. I want my clients to love their new facility.”

Molly’s involvement on a project ranges from schematic design to construction administration, incorporating elements such as programming, space planning, material curation, lighting design, graphics, and signage. A true rising star, she has been recognized by the Wichita Business Journal in their “Young Professionals in a Major Company” publication. When asked what drives her, Molly said, “A well-designed environment can reflect a community’s identity and make people feel empowered, and I love getting to be a part of that.”

At Schaefer, our commitment to excellence extends beyond design to the leadership that guides our teams. This dedication is exemplified by our in-house interior design department, where innovative designers create cohesive environments that elevate our projects. As we celebrate these achievements, we also recognize the importance of strong leadership in fostering creativity and collaboration.
