Maize South Intermediate School

Following an intense planning process, the Maize school district determined that creating schools for 5th and 6th grades would work best to solve overcrowding issues and meet the transitional educational needs of the students. The resulting Maize Intermediate schools include spaces to enhance students’ learning experience and focus on 21st century skills, including a large maker space, and interior and exterior collaboration areas.

Daylighting is abundant throughout the school, directly into spaces or thru interior glass windows or doors. Large classroom wings allow students to remain within their learning groups for core classes, creating a small school feel. Two full-size gyms, music rooms with a large stage for performances, art labs and a technology/media center provide enhanced opportunities for students as they transition from elementary school and prepare for middle school. Safety and security concerns are addressed with controlled building entrances, storm shelters, and security system with cameras. The site was designed to include separate drop-off areas for vehicles and buses, visitor parking and staff parking.
