Project Highlight | Hutchinson YMCA

Providing a welcoming space where Hutchinson residents can gather, stay active, and thrive for generations to come.
Completed earlier this summer, the new Hutchinson YMCA marks the newest chapter in the Greater Wichita YMCA story. Our team attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 6, celebrating the grand opening of the 73,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art community hub. With a dash of space exploration woven into the YMCA’s recognizable design standards, this facility is a must-see destination for your summer plans.
The project was originally envisioned to be an addition to the existing Hutchinson YMCA; however, as fundraising progressed and the vision for the facility grew beyond the support the existing site could manage, plans changed. Through a fruitful relationship forged between the YMCA and the CEO of Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, who is not a Hutchinson native but grew up immersed in programs that the YMCA offers, land owned by the Hospital became available to the YMCA for purchase.
The vision that developed throughout the design process puts the YMCA facility in the position to serve as the “front door” to health and wellness in the City of Hutchinson.
Three primary facility components, identified early in the design process, anchor the new YMCA: the natatorium, gymnastics center, and family center. The natatorium features a six-lane, 25-yard lap pool that will serve not only the YMCA swim team but also high school swim teams from around the area. For year-round family recreation, it also includes a 4,000-square-foot activity pool complete with a splash pad, current channel, and medium-depth water designed for aquatic fitness programming.
The existing YMCA was home to a thriving gymnastics program, but activities and equipment were spread throughout the building. The new design brings everything together in a single, high-volume, 5,500-square-foot Gymnastics Center featuring expansive glass walls and ample spectator seating for families.
The Family Center was envisioned as a welcoming, multigenerational gathering space that encourages both activity and connection. Designed with engaging spaces for young children and comfortable social areas for adults, it reinforces the YMCA’s role as a community destination. Bringing the theme back to Hutchinson through a collaboration with the Kansas Cosmosphere, the finishing touch is a fitting space-themed indoor playground and climbing feature.

Additional amenities throughout the facility include three program studios of varying sizes for cycling, mind/body classes, and group exercise; a sports gym configured for basketball, volleyball, and pickleball adjacent to the Gymnastics Center; and an elevated indoor walking track that overlooks activity spaces from the second floor. The facility also features men’s and women’s locker rooms with phenolic lockers, tile accent walls, and quartz countertops, as well as a universal locker room equipped with private shower rooms and changing stalls. Families will also appreciate the 1,700-square-foot drop-in childcare area, known as the Kid Zone, which provides supervised care for young children while parents enjoy the facility.
The new Hutchinson YMCA is more than just a recreation center — it is an investment in the health, wellness, and connection of the community. Thoughtfully designed to serve members of every age, the facility reflects a shared vision between the YMCA and its community partners while providing a welcoming space where Hutchinson residents can gather, stay active, and thrive for generations to come.
