Encountering joy and adventure around every corner.
The Geary County USD 475 Early Childhood Center is a project that Schaefer Architecture is thrilled to highlight after its recent completion. Our team worked on both the architecture and interior elements of the facility, crafting beautiful designs to establish the Center as an exciting place for children to learn and grow.
What was the focus of the Early Childhood Center’s interior design, and what did the design entail?
Our very own Molly Loveland served as Interior Designer on the project, helping transform the Early Childhood Center into a place where design and storytelling work hand in hand. From the beginning, the team was inspired by the idea of immersing students in the world of their beloved mascot, Little Jay. Early concepts explored architectural expressions of the mascot, including nests, angled metal paneling inspired by twigs, and hallways laid out as bird wings in flight. With 32 classrooms serving exclusively 3-and-4-year-old Pre-K students, the team recognized the importance of creating a localized familiarity throughout the school. To create cohesive visual storytelling, the team brought on Gardner Design to collaborate and develop the environmental graphics.
Just as early childhood marks the beginning of a child’s educational journey and life of adventure, the design parallels that journey with the adventures of Little Jay. A storybook-inspired wayfinding system guides students through four adventures: exploring under the sea, flying through clouds alongside hot air balloons, traveling back in time with the dinosaurs, and venturing beyond the stars. Each classroom wing is anchored by one of these adventures, giving students a memorable way to navigate the school. Coordinating colors, illustrations, and material selections extend each theme throughout the interior, appearing in wallcovering, millwork, built-out soffits, graphic glass film, reading niches, and furniture selections. Together, these details create a cohesive visual language that immerses the students in the landscape.
At the heart of the school, students are transported into an adventure a little closer to home, the Great Plains. A centralized hub brings together alternative learning environments including a library nestled within the trees that Little Jay calls home, a learning platform elevated into the Midwest skies, and an independent study spot tucked into an immersive birdhouse.

Children’s developing brains and biological systems are shaped by their surroundings and environment, often influencing their lifelong health and well-being; which is why such care must be paid when designing facilities that will impact their daily lives. The design team thoughtfully collaborated with the school district to cultivate a learning environment that would inspire children to not only grow in their education, but also their imagination. The children served by this Early Childhood Center will encounter the fun and whimsical journeys of their friend and school mascot Little Jay, lending them joy and adventure to be found around every corner.
